Personal emergency leave can be taken in case of personal illness, injury, or medical emergencies or even in the case of certain specified family members' death, injury, medical emergencies, or other urgent matters. Ontario's Employment Standards Act specifies that for the purposes of emergency leaves, "family member" includes the employee's spouse (including married and unmarried couples of the same or opposite genders), parent, step-parent, foster parent, child, step-child, foster child, grandparent, step-grandparent, grandchild or step-granchild, sibling, or any relative who is dependent on the employee for care or assistance.
